Basil/ Sabja Seeds

Price range: R59.00 through R949.00

About this product

Basil seeds, also known as sabja seeds, tukmaria, or falooda seeds, are the tiny black seeds of the sweet basil plant(Ocimum basilicum), the same plant used for culinary basil leaves. Though similar in appearance to chia seeds, they are entirely different botanically and nutritionally. When soaked in water, basil seeds swell and form a gelatinous coating, giving them a distinctive texture—soft on the outside and slightly crunchy inside.

They are flavourless, making them ideal for blending into various beverages and dishes without altering taste, while adding visual appeal and unique mouthfeel/palatable experience.

Common Uses:

  • Falooda: A popular South Asian dessert drink made with rose syrup, milk, vermicelli, and soaked basil seeds.
  • Smoothies & Shakes: Added to fruit-based drinks for texture without altering flavor.
  • Iced Drinks: Stirred into lemonades, iced teas, or mocktails for a floating, jelly-like effect.
  • Lassi: Mixed into yogurt-based drinks for added richness and interest.

 Desserts

  • Puddings & Jellies: Used like chia seeds in non-bake puddings with coconut milk, almond milk, or fruit purées.

    • Sprinkled on baked goods after baking (muffins, cupcakes, or breads).
